Elementary School Teacher and Iditarod musher Trent Herbst will race the 2009 race to help NLRI with its mission: saving lives on water. Together they are an improbable but committed team that promotes the idea that rescue operations are still needed in remote communities of Africa, as they were in the past for Alaskan villages such as Nome.

The Race for Rescue is still on……

The Ugandan NGO NLRI was established in 2002 to improve the livelihoods of lakeshore communities throughout East Africa and reduce the horrific rate of drownings they suffer. For every fisherman lost on the lakes or rivers, it is estimated he leaves at least 7 dependant behind to fend for themselves. Drowning is the most frequent cause of accident death in rural Uganda.

NLRI has various programmes to make critical components of water safety accessible and affordable to all, namely: education, floatation, communication and search & rescue.

Details for this year’s project will be online this September when Trent begins his fall-training for the 2009 race.
